Starting out from the idea that the new 'sensorium' is a newly emerged way of seeing characteristic of the modern, which disturbs our perceptual foundations and has the city as its epicentre, we propose an unorthodox reading of Walter Benjamin's Passagenwerk and Jules Verne's Paris au XXème Siècle. We argue that both Benjamin's and Verne's works expose, by means of diverse operations, a new sensibility and an unprecedented experience of modernity in French society of the second half of the nineteenth century, thus delineating its prehistory - which, as we see it, is in fact the protohistory of an ethos of seduction that will be crystallised in the so-called 'consumer societies' of late capitalism.
